Changes on the Surface

Ford EcoSport Lightning Blue Front

Ford EcoSport LED DRLsThe EcoSport features a fully updated front with bigger headlamps, a redesigned grille and a new bumper. Rather than being split, the grille has been united in a singular hexagonal shape. The front bumper gets new squared off fog lamps with LED DRLs.

Upon Getting In

The large floating touchscreen in the centre of the dash is probably the biggest change one would notice upon getting inside the car. This infotainment system comes with Ford’s SYNC3 technology which can support Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and has proven to be very capable. The screen itself is offered in two sizes: a 6.5 or an 8 inch, depending on the level of trim.

Ford EcoSport Interiors SYNC3

The top level Titanium+ variant comes with a load of extra features such as cruise control, rain sensing wipers, automatic climate control, automatic headlamps, hill start assist, tyre pressure monitoring system, ESC and even Traction Control.

Ford EcoSport Safety Airbags

Coming down all the way to the basic variant isn’t half bad either as Ford offers dual airbags, ABS and EBD as standard throughout the EcoSport range

Under The Hood

Ford EcoSport Front Grille HexThe updated EcoSport comes with a new petrol engine from the Dragon lineup. This is a naturally aspirated 1500 cc 3 cylinder unit producing a peak power output of 120 BHP@6500 RPM with a max torque of 150 Nm@4500 RPM. It will be mated to a 5 speed manual and a 6 speed automatic transmission.

Ford EcoSport White Mean

The 1500 cc turbodiesel engine has been retained without any updates or changes. The unit maxes out at 96 BHP@3750 RPM while putting out a max torque of 205 Nm@1750 RPM. This diesel powerhouse is available with a manual transmission only.

Summary

The new and updated EcoSport has been revised, revamped and reloaded and will rejoin the competitive scene of the compact SUV market with a better footing. The new Ford will be going up against Maruti Vitara Brezza, Honda WR-V, Mahindra TUV300 and the Tata Nexon.

FEATURED: Upcoming Ford Figo Cross

0
Ford KA Trail White Unveiled Brazil

When?

The Ford Figo Cross/Freestyle will be launched somewhere in the month of February 2018. The price for the car is expected to be around 5.50 lakhs.

Ford Figo KA Trail

What’s New & Different?

Ford KA Trail BlackFord will be raising the ground clearance to 185 mm for the crossover. The standard Figo offers 170 mm of clearance, making this a total 15 mm boost which matters a lot specially on Indian roads. To accompany the height raise, the new Figo Cross will come with 185/60 R15 tyres.

Aside from the car getting a raise, the Figo will also be getting a more muscular look thanks to the addition of the wider tyres, roof rails and body cladding

Ford KA Trail WhiteFord has also decided to fit the car with a new petrol engine along with a new transmission. The Dragon engine lineup is set to make its debut with the new Ford. It will be a naturally aspirated 3 cylinder unit with 1200 cc of displacement which will be putting out 95 BHP and 115 Nm of torque and will be mated to a new 5 speed manual transmission from Getrag, the gearbox manufacturer.

Ford KA Trail Interior

The geeky side of us is pleased to hear that even the base variant will be featuring a 6 inch touchscreen infotainment system. But obviously the higher variants will be much better as they will come with an 8 inch screen which will support Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, voice assist, emergency assist and a range of other apps using the SYNC3 interface.

Why Would You Buy One?

The Figo cross is basically a lifestyle alternative, it can handle the broken back roads where a standard hatchback would fail and would be easy to drive like a standard hatch on the busy city streets. Its neither a huge SUV and nor a town car made solely for the streets, what it is though is the best of both worlds. Its a crossover.

Ford KA Trail Red

So, if you don’t want all the bulk of a SUV and still be able to go off the road and disconnect for the weekend, the Figo Cross just might be your next best partner.

REVIEW: Hyundai Verna

0
Hyundai Verna 2017 featured image

The Hyundai Verna has been an all time best selling sedan and a feather in Hyundai’s cap for a long period of time. The car has garnered a huge fan following and much love for itself. First introduced way back in 2006, it didn’t take long for the sedan to pile up massive sales as well as awards such as ‘Car of the Year 2007’ and much more.

Hyundai Verna 2007

Some people would still tell you that the original Verna is far better than today’s iteration but that could be charted up to the nostalgia feeling associated with it and also to the fact that the Verna was a revolution at the time of its launch.

Verna Transform Silver

Since then, the Verna has gone through various transformations with the first face-lift even getting the label ‘transform’. This model was launched in 2010 and was discontinued just after a year with Hyundai adapting the ‘Fluidic’ design language. This saw the introduction of the fully redesigned Fluidic Verna.

Fluidic Verna White

Winning the ‘Reader’s Choice Mid-size Car of the Year’ at Top Gear Awards in 2011 and ‘Best Design and Styling’ by Bloomberg UTV Autocar Awards in 2012 among many others, the Fluidic Verna took the market by storm and is still hailed as one of the all time great sedans.

Hyundai Verna 2017

Replacing the Fluidic Verna is the fifth generation 2017 Verna with which Hyundai is now following a more rounded design. The new Verna also comes with first in class features such as ventilated seats. Coming as no shock to anyone, the new Verna has won the ‘Indian Car of the Year-2018’ award. This is the car we want to talk about in detail.

Variants & Colors

Available in 12 different variants, the 2017 Verna offers two engine options along with a manual and an automatic gearbox. The top variant comes with all the bells and whistles such as a sunroof, the earlier mentioned ventilated seats, cruise control and push button start.

Color Gallery

Exteriors

On the front, the car now features a hexagonal grille with wider headlamps bordered by LEDs. The overall design is similar to that of the Elantra which shouldn’t come as a surprise as the Verna now shares the same platform. The new Verna is also wider, longer and taller.

Hyundai Verna 2017 Phantom Black Front

The Verna retains its coupe styled roof line and the strong shoulder line which goes all the way to the back of the car. The new wrap around LED tail lamps add a layer of symmetry to an aesthetically pleasing rear design.

Hyundai Verna Black Exterior

Hyundai keeps on improving the design of the Verna and thankfully, they have also improved the suspension on the updated model, this was the Achilles heel of the outgoing model.

Interiors

The dual tone black and beige interiors of the Verna look really elegant and the rich quality of materials used give them a perfect finish. The front seats are ventilated, as stated earlier. The glove box remains cooled and the side door pockets are perfect to place your daily car stuff in.

Hyundai Verna 2017 Interior

another thing which is new is the 7.0 inch touchscreen Audio Video Navigation system which is centrally mounted on the dashboard

Hyundai Verna Phantom Black Side Exterior

Hyundai has also come up with an app called the Auto Link which would enable the user to check the vehicle’s essential stats from their smartphones. The newly introduced Smart Electric Sunroof is intuitive to use and would not shut completely if it detects an object in its way. The rear curtain also gives a wonderful touch.

Hyundai Verna Interior 6 Airbags

Another set of added features include electrically adjustable ORVMs, rear AC vents, dual charging ports, climate control and a hands-free opening boot. The top variant gets adds even more such as six airbags, ABS and EBD.

Hyundai Verna Remote Opening Boot Handsfree

Hyundai Verna Steering Wheel Cruise ControlCruise Control has also been added to the features list which is a blessing. I personally own a Fluidic Verna which doesn’t have the Cruise Control option and trust me you want that when your are cruising down a highway.

Performance & Mileage

Powered by a 1600 cc four cylinder petrol and diesel engines, the Verna comes mated to a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic gearbox. The diesel unit puts out 126 BHP@4000 RPM and a peak torque of 260 Nm from 1500 RPM.

Hyundai Verna 2017 Sienna Brown Tail Lamp

The petrol engine makes 121 BHP@6400 RPM with a max torque of 151 Nm@4850 RPM.

To Summarize…

Hyundai Verna 2017 Phantom Black

The next gen Verna is already making waves and is well on its way to be yet another success for the company. The addition of features such as Cruise Control, a sunroof and ventilated seats make it perfect for the current mid size sedan market in India. The Verna will go up against Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, Honda City and many others.

The mileage figures for the standard diesel and petrol cars are 20.14 kmpl and 16.47 kmpl respectively. The GT TDI and GT TSI return a higher 21.49 kmpl and 17.21 kmpl.

So What’s Next?

The February of 2018 will see the arrival of a completely revised Polo. The design of the updated model takes inspiration from its elder brother, the Golf. However, it still retains the core look of the outgoing Polo.

Polo 2018 GTi

The grille flows seamlessly into the headlamps with a huge VW badge in the middle as always. The front of the car features a matured and executive look while also being sharp and sporty at the same time.

Volkswagen Polo GTi 2018

The rear pretty much looks the same except the tail lights wrap around the boot now.

The Polo is now wider and features new designer alloys with five spokes

Inside, the Polo is much more roomier and also features more rear leg room. At the centre of the dashboard is the Active Info Display which works like Audi’s virtual cockpit and replaces the physical instrument cluster and dials.

VW Polo 2018 Red & Black Interior

Also, there is a 6.5-8 inch touchscreen infotainment system capable of displaying an array of car and driver related information along with media.

The Polo still comes WITH front dual airbags and abs ALONG WITH ebd

Power is delivered from the same engine as the current Polo but with a few performance tweaks. The car will be offered with the 1500 cc diesel engine and the 1200 cc petrol engine with the GT model using a 1200 cc turbocharged petrol unit.

Volkswagen Polo 2018 Side Stance

Final Impressions

The Polo was a success when it was launched back in 2003 and it has always maintained its footing in the Indian market. While the car has received some much needed upgrades in the performance and engine part of the equation and the 2018 Polo also promises a complete revamp, it still feels like Hyundai and other brands might be a few steps ahead of VW as far as India is concerned.

VW Polo Concept 2018

Make no mistake though, the Polo is not at all a slouch, the car is a pleasure to drive and can zip through traffic as well as cruise comfortably on a high speed highway and it comes with legendary German reliability. But so can Hyundai’s i20, Maruti Suzuki’s Swift and so many others. So the Polo is really a matter of personal choice and taste.

BEFORE YOU BUY: Skoda Kodiaq

0
Skoda Kodiaq Featured Image

What Is It?

The Kodiaq is the first time Skoda has offered a full size SUV. It offers 7 seats and immaculate styling with luxurious interiors. Although its not as imposing as the Ford Endeavour or Toyota’s Fortuner, it does capture your vision.

The Body

The Kodiaq features a really well built and a beautifully crafted body with immense attention being paid to details. The broad shouldered Skoda has clear and precise lines which make the car looks extremely desirable. You will end up turning a lot of heads if you buy this car.

Skoda Kodiaq Black Rear Side

The other good thing about the Kodiaq is that it is not at all an excessively large vehicle making it easier to drive in and around the the city traffic. Skoda also hits a few other seet spots with the head lights flowing seamlessly into the grille, the 18 inch alloy wheels, designing of the tail gate and the rear lights and bold wheel arches.

All in all the Skoda Kodiaq is a beautiful looking SUV.

On The Inside

The interior is made of a beautiful blend of beige and black with lighter and premium materials being used. The sunroof adds to the airiness of the cabin. A low set dash which is well layered makes for a well rounded interior.

Skoda Kodiaq Beige Interior

Skoda Kodiaq Gear Knob DSG

The gear knob is chunky to hold and has a premium feel to it. There is also a lot of storage space available with dual glove boxes, under the armrest storage and pockets on each door. Control stalks behind the steering wheel and the climate control switches are easy to reach.

There is a centrally mounted 8 inch infotainment touchscreen display which supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The output is delivered through a 12 speaker system with crisp and clear audio.Skoda Kodiaq Infotainment System

The front of the car is bugged with microphones which pick up the passenger’s voice and it through the speakers to make conversation easier at high speeds

Skoda Kodiaq Euro NCAP Rating
Skoda Kodiaq scroes 5 stars in the Euro NCAP Safety Test

If safety is the most important for you when buying a car, the Kodiaq should definitely be a top pick as it features 9 airbags, ABS, ESP, a drowsiness alert system, parking sensors in every direction and hands free parking.

Skoda Kodiaq Middle Row Seats FoldedThe front and second row of seats are really comfortable with the exact amount of cushioning, leg room as well as under thigh support. However, it is really hard to get into the last row as the seats in the middle do not fold completely.

Skoda Kodiaq Boot Middle Seat Folded

The electric tailgate opens into a boot offering 270 litres of space with all the rows up. The storage increases to 630 litres on folding the third row and upto 2005 litres with both the rear rows of seats folded.

The Drive

Skoda Kodiaq Headlamp

Skoda Kodiaq Engine Transmission

The Kodiaq is powered by a 2000 cc turbo diesel engine which gives 150 BHP of power and 340 Nm of torque. The same engine with different tuning is used to power Octavia and Superb. The one used in the Kodiaq though, is tuned more for fuel efficiency rather than performance.

Skoda Kodiaq Off Road

The engine is very refined and one can hardly feel any vibrations in the cabin or hear the noise. Acceleration is quick and the engine manages to shift the bulky SUV like a sedan. But on the highways, this unit does leave you wanting for more power with the punch being lackluster at triple digit speeds.

Skoda Kodiaq Rear In Motion

The engine comes mated to a 7 speed dual clutch automatic gearbox which does a commendable job. The gearbox is very responsive and makes sure the car is always in the max torque band. Thanks to the 6th and 7th gear ratios, the Kodiaq becomes a great long distance runner with speeds of about 120 km/h being achieved at just about 1800 RPM.

Driving Modes Traction Control

The car also comes with different driving modes. For example there is a Snow mode for well when you’re in the Snow and Sport for when you wanna crunch up the miles in a hurry. While cornering, the car feels planted and predictable without much body roll thanks to the light steering. The suspension is also well sought out as it absorbs all the potholes without even spilling so much as a drop of water.

The chassis makes the car feel really planted even at high speeds without any signs of instability

The Bottom Line

The Skoda Kodiaq is a fantastic family car with a lot of clever features, luxurious interior and executive looks. The car feels great to drive even though its a bit under powered. With a price tag of 34.5 Lakhs (ex showroom DELHI) it is expected to compete against Ford’s Endaevour and the Toyota Fortuner.

Skoda Kodiaq Red City

So, if you really want a SUV with road presence and a commanding stance, the Kodiaq is definitely not the choice for you. But if you do want to buy a SUV that’s well put together, has a butt load of features and is as fun to drive as a sedan while seating 7, I present to you THE SKODA KODIAQ.

REVIEW: Renault Kwid

0
kwid featured image fiery red

Renault Kwid has grown to be the most attractive economic offering in the country. Appealing to buyers of every age and group. Things like the first in class touchscreen infotainment system and that SUV like stance have attracted a ton of Indian buyers to this entry level French hatchback.

Renault Kwid Rxt Fiery Red Side Profile

Variants & Colors

The Kwid is available from as little as 2.62 lakhs (ex showroom DELHI) with the top spec costing 4.55 lakhs (ex showroom DELHI)A total of 5 different variants are available with 2 types of petrol engines. Renault also offers an automatic gearbox (AMT) with a 1000 cc petrol engine.

renault kwid climber electric blue

The 2 special variants available are the 02 Anniversary Edition and the Climber. The 02 Anniversary Edition is powered by both the 800 cc and the 1000 cc engines mated to a manual gearbox.

The Climber on the other hand gets its wheels moving due to the 1000 cc engine mated to manual or the AMT gearbox.

Colors which the Kwid fancies:

Performance & Mileage

This little French car might look like much of a performer on the paper but it has got quite the surprise hidden in its little engine. The power output is less in BHPs but the way the car manages those horses and the way it just serves up power in any gear is nothing short of exciting.

renault kwid brown rear

Both the engine are made of 3 cylinders which make them quite small and robust. The 800 cc unit manages to squirt out 53.3 BHP@5678 RPM and a max torque of 72 Nm@4386 RPM. The one with 1000 cc puts out 67 BHP@5500 RPM with a torque rating of 91 Nm@4250 RPM.

renault kwid anniversary ed

Coming to fuel efficiency, this is where the Renault Kwid really shines. The 800 cc variants with manual transmission return 25.17 kmpl while 23.01 kmpl is the figure Renault claims for the 1000 cc variants which have been mated to the 5 speed manual gearbox.

The AMT models return a slightly higher 24.04 kmpl which is an impressive feat on its own. The 5 speed auto transmission is controlled by a dial present in the cabin. This is definitely unique to the Kwid and makes for an effortless automatic experience.

Renault Kwid AMT

Inside The Kwid

The Kwid comes with a more than decent interior according to its price tag. This is mainly because it shares a lot of materials with other cars which are much higher in Renault’s lineup. The look and feel of the plastics used is pretty decent with the chrome inserts on the whole piano black theme coming as a cherry on top of an already delicious cake.

kwid interior front seats

Kwid RXT features interiorThe top of the line RXT OPTIONAL variant comes with a butt load of extras such as the 7 inch infotainment display with GPS, keyless entry by means of a remote, central locking and one touch lane change indicator which is always a very useful tool when driving in and out of the city.

Renault kwid interior wide shot

There is a lot of storage space in the front along with glass and bottle holders. The rear leg room is decent enough when you take the overall size of the car into account. The boot is also sizable enough offering a storage space of 300 litres which should prove to be sufficient enough for a couple of bags at least.

On The Outside

kwid muscular front fiery red

With its flared wheel arches, the honeycomb grille and an overall imposing stance, Renault has crafted the Kwid to look as muscular as a full grown SUV. The front of the car is one of the biggest selling points of the car.

a ground clearance of 180 mm does the job of supplementing the car’s looks.

The special 02 Anniversary Edition comes with decals and orange alloys as well as orange ORVMs and rear spoiler. The numbers 02 are printed on the bonnet and doors in orange as well. This makes the car look sporty and fun.

02 anniversary edition kwid

The Climber is also a special edition Kwid which is available in Electric Blue features orange ORVMs along with front fog amps surrounded by black body work. The chequered flag which runs along the bottom of the doors has also been blacked out. This gives the car a funky as well as an outdoor-ish kind of vibe.

Kwid Climber Features exterior electric blue

Summary & Pricelist

The Renault Kwid is the best entry level hatchback available in India. The muscular exterior styling combined with the interiors of a much more luxurious car make it the bargain of the century. No wonder why its Renault’s best seller. The car is amazing with a jaw dropping price tag.

Review: Ford Figo

0

The Ford Figo, the car that underwent the biggest make over and came out to be one of the best hatches available in the country. Ford has recently been on quite a roll with its new and refreshed lineup including this car and other great ones such as the EcoSport and the new Endeavour. And how can we forget the moment Ford opened its gates to roll out the legendary Mustang. Coming back to the car at hand.

Figo Sparkling gold front

Variants & Colors

Launched in 2015, the Figo is available as a hatchback and also as a compact sedan under the alias Ford Figo Aspire. The car comes in 17 variants which offer manual and auto transmission combined with diesel and petrol engines. The prices vary from 4.8 lakhs to 7.8 lakhs (ex showroom DELHI).

Ford Figo sparkling gold

There is also a sports edition among these which comes with tuned suspension, higher performance, blacked out rims and a meaner looking grille. The diesel powered sports edition has a capacity of 1500 cc and puts out 99 BHP@3750 RPM with a max torque of 215 Nm@1750 RPM.

Different shades of the Figo:

Performance & Mileage

The normal 1200 cc petrol engine delivers 87 BHP@6300 RPM and 112 Nm@4000 RPM while returning a mileage of 18.16 kmpl. The bigger 1500 cc petrol engine which is the only one to feature an automatic gearbox delivers a healthy power output of 110 BHP@6300 RPM and 136 Nm of torque @4250 RPM. Known as the Titanium 1.5 Ti-VCT AT, it is the most expensive and also the least efficient variant, returning only 17 kmpl.

From The Inside

The Figo’s interiors are all black with silver finishes here and there like on the center console and the door handles inside the car. Although they do not feel very premium, the black does look sporty.

Ford Figo interior front dash

Ford Figo center consoleThe centrally mounted screen is visible from every angle and is also bright enough against the sun but where it lacks is the huge army of buttons associated with it. The cluster of buttons is confusing specially for a first time user plus it is that much more difficult when one is driving.

The Figo also misses on the passenger airbag throughout the range contrary to its German rival: The Volkswagen Polo. The driver does get an airbag as standard though.

The Exteriors

The Ford Figo looks like a focused hatch on the outside especially with that Aston Martin like grille. The overall stance of the car is immersive and looks ready to go even when its still.

Ford Figo front exterior

The Sports Edition looks even meaner and better with its blacked out rims and head lamps along with the bigger tyres. The tuned suspension just adds towards the overall hot hatch appeal of the car.

Closure

The Figo is a wonderfully engineered vehicle and has all the potential to be car enthusiast’s dream car. But at the same time even with its competitive pricing, the Figo does seem to lack a bit on some hatchback essentials. But if one could over look certain pedantic requirements, Ford has finally got the the perfect hatchback for you.

Review: The Hyundai i20

0
Elite i20 feature

The i20, the hatchback which became one of the cornerstones for Hyundai’s success. This car has reserved a very special place in my books as well while it was serving as my daily driver for more than 5 years. The first gen i20 had a huge impact on me. It was comfortable off the roads in the Himalayan valleys and was a dream to drive on the road at the same time. Changing gears to the current i20.

The i20 is currently available in two avatars: Elite i20 and i20 Active. While the Elite is a premium hatchback, the Active is a crossover which comes with a certain degree of off road capabilities.

Variants of the Elite i20 are Hyundai’s standard labels: Era, Magna, Sportz, Asta and the top spec Asta (O) which can be paired with diesel or petrol engines and an auto or manual gearbox. Color shades are as follows:

The i20 Active comes in only four variants: Base 1.2 or 1.4 (Petrol or Diesel), S, SX and SX WITH AVN. The car is available with petrol and diesel engines mated exclusively to a manual gearbox. Different colors on offer are:

The i20 Active and Elite i20 are powered by the same 1200 cc petrol and 1400 cc diesel engines. However they do posses slightly different claimed fuel efficiency figures when paired to either one.

Interiors

elite i20 interiors front seats

The Elite i20 comes with dual tone beige and black interiors which looks nice and classy. The materials used are solid and feel premium. A centrally mounted touch screen which comes integrated with GPS navigation, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is available on the Asta trim and upwards.

The rear seats get a respectable amount of leg room with a dedicated AC vent. The car also comes with a precise rear parking camera and sensors. 2 airbags are standard throughout the range with a cooled glove box being introduced on the Sportz version and upwards. The boot is good for 285 litres which is quite spacious and convenient to load.    i20 active boot

The i20 Active comes with orange on black and blue on black color schemes for the interiors. This gives the car a much more sporty look on the inside as compared to the Elite i20. Other than that, the look and feel of the car are identical to its sibling’s cabin with a slightly different instrument cluster.

From the Outside

Both the cars posses a striking stance from the outside and look ready to pounce. The Active sits a bit higher at 190 mm, giving it a bit more road presence. The Elite on the other hand looks sleek and more rounded than its edgy sister.

The front and rear of both the cars are beautiful to look at. There are minor differences between them and which one looks better is just a matter of personal taste. The design language which Hyundai has been following is dynamic and sensational, the pictures speak for themselves so I don’t have to.

In The End

The Hyundai i20 has been, is and always will be the hatchback of my choice. Now I know that sounds completely controversial to our earlier articles and the title we have bestowed upon the Baleno, but sometimes you just don’t want the best, sometimes you want a car which shows you that it is not just a machine but so much more. In essence, this car showed me its soul.

Below are a few pictures outlining my experience with the i20:

There is no price you can put on that. But still you could visit a multitude of other blogs and websites for the prices of the different variants.

The Best Hatchback of 2017: MARUTI SUZUKI BALENO

0
Baleno Featured Image

Why?

The Baleno is a part of Maruti Suzuki’s NEXA lineup along with the new S-Cross, Ignis and the newly inducted Ciaz. The car we have been on about in our TOP 7 HATCHBACKS OF 2017 review also happens to be the best selling premium hatchback of 2017. So the question really seems to be WHY NOT?

Baleno ray blue side

This here is a detailed review of the Baleno. However, if you are only interested in the selling points of the car, you should check out our TOP 7 HATCHBACKS OF 2017. I think I have plugged that enough, so moving on with the review.

Variants & Colors

Not much to say here except there are 12 standard variants available with petrol and diesel engines and auto or manual transmission. The table at the end of the article explains the basic differences among them. There is also a special variant available, something called a 1.0 RS which we will ponder upon later on in the review. For now, check out all the different Colors the car has to offer:

Performance & Mileage

The Baleno is powered by a 1200 cc petrol engine which produces 83 BHP@6000 RPM and 115 Nm of torque. This engine also comes with a claimed mileage of 21.4 kmpl.

Baleno front

The diesel powered Baleno has a capacity of 1300 cc capable of producing 74 BHP@4000 RPM alongwith 190 Nm of torque straight from 2000 RPM. Maruti claims a mileage of 27.39 kmpl for the diesel Baleno.

For some reason, the Baleno is offered with automatic(CVT) along with the petrol variant only

The diesel buyers will have to stick to manual which for most of us is not much of a setback.

Coming to the most exciting Baleno, the 1.0 RS comes with a 998 cc petrol engine. Now before you get put off by that, keep in mind this little engine is capable of a healthy 101 BHP@5500 RPM and 150 Nm of torque at 1700 RPM while returning a mileage of 21.1 kmpl

Baleno RS red

So, the engine is rev happy and won’t be making you change gears everytime a little hill comes in the way. This is a proper hot hatch version of the Baleno and we love it for its manual transmission, high revving engine and low running costs.

baleno rs back

On The Outside

The Baleno has sleek lines along the front which are carried all the way to the back giving the car a very sleek and aerodynamic look. The front grille complements the overall design of the car with the chrome Suzuki badge in the middle and the chromed out border adds more bling to it. The headlamps are very neatly tucked and are swept back which gives them a flowing look. The top end spec gets DRLs, projector headlamps and reverse parking sensors.

Baleno smoke and dark

The rear of the car has been as beautifully crafted as the front. The squarish tail lights and the Swift like boxy ending make it perfect and the car just looks urban and modern from every angle. The car sits on 15 inch tyres with a ground clearance of 170 mm and weighs only 865 kg.

Baleno Rear

Inside The Car

The Baleno has a very spacious and well thought out cabin with sufficient leg room in the rear and the front. The front seats are very comfortable and offer goo lumbar support which means that driving this car on longer routes won’t result in back ache. The rear seats are equally accommodating with a really surprising amount of rear leg room.

Baleno Rear Leg room

There are plenty of small storage spaces inside the cabin along with cup holders for when you want to enjoy a refreshing drink. Though your drink would not be cold for long as the Baleno does not offer a cooled glove box like the i20.

baleno interior 1

The car does feature electric ORVMs which can be adjusted from the inside. The boot offers 339 litres of space and a 60:40 split although the narrow loading lip makes it a bit of a task.

Baleno boot size

The centrally mounted touch screen display comes with GPS, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. But you do have to pay extra for all this as it is available only on the top end Alpha spec.

Baleno interior 2

All in all the Baleno features a very neat, practical and spacious cabin with a lot of cubby holes and really good amount of leg room and I mean really good. It definitely gives you a premium feeling and is overall a very good place to be.

The King Of Premium Hatchbacks

Yep, the Baleno is truly deserving of that title as it has a variant to suit everyone’s needs, striking appearance, elegant styling and a really spacious cabin (over emphasized but true). It is now a far cry from the car which comes to mind when you think back at the time when Maruti first tried to enter the premium segment with the older Baleno.

FEATURED: The Upcoming 2018 Maruti Suzuki Swift

0
Swift Featured Image

Launched in 2004, the Swift soon became India’s premier hatchback. This iconic car launched the Japanese car manufacturer to the top and soon the Swift became extremely popular while it was being sold by the millions. The second generation Swift also adhered to the same design and never wandered away much from the original. And why would it? like they say, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Black Swift Front

However, the upcoming Swift does venture away from the original enough to be called a proper update. While not going entirely bonkers with the new Swift, Maruti Suzuki hasn’t played it completely safe either.

Swift Rear

Major Changes At A Glance

The most noticeable differences are up front with a redesigned grille and new head lamps although, it still does maintain the boxy outlook and the same stance which its predecessor made a name out of

Swift side stance

The new Swift now comes with DRLs and as mentioned above, the aggressive hexagonal grille and fully LED head lamps make sure that the car leaves a long lasting impression and does not go unnoticed.

yellow Swift sport

However, by the time the new Swift is released, Indian consumes will have already gotten used to the new face of the car as the revamped and already launched Dzire features an almost identical front. Still, if the sales of the Dzire are anything to go by, the Swift will be just fine and is definitely expected to follow in the footsteps of the outgoing model.

the new tail lamps are now more rounded and squarish with the rear door handle integrated into the c pillar

Swift rear red

The longer wheelbase means the Swift has grown up and the larger 16 inch wheels just add to making it look bigger. Even after giving it the full Botox treatment, Maruti Suzuki hasn’t forgotten the looks which gathered such a large audience for the car. And it shows as the new Swift still maintains that cheekiness which will send fans of the car into a nostalgia trip.

Swift boot space

Boot space has been increased from 204 litres to 265 litres which means you can now pack more bags to take away on that long vacation

Swift interior 1

The interior is now much more spacious thanks to the 20 mm increase in wheel base and 40 mm increase in the overall width of the car. The rear legroom also benefits from this gain as now there is much more space for the taller ones among us to sit comfortably. It could get a bit dark in the rear though due to the blacked out glass panel and the thick C pillar.

Swift interior-dash

Moving on to the front seats of the car, the dash looks much more premium thanks to the 7 inch touchscreen and the funky and circular AC control knobs. But if Maruti Suzuki decides to make the interiors similar to the Dzire, these features may not make it into the new Swift. We hope that they do though because otherwise, the car doesn’t feel premium enough to compete with the Hyundai i20 and others in the segment. The circular AC vents and the chunky steering wheel are synonymous with the Swift and are thankfully here to stay.

Swift head lamp

The Swift will carry over the engines from the outgoing car and will be powered by the 1200 cc K Series petrol engine and the now aged Fiat’s 1300 cc Multijet diesel engine. Both of which will have improved performance and mileage figures as compared to those previously mentioned in the TOP 7 HATCHBACKS article. This is mainly due to the chassis of the Swift being much lighter thanks to Suzuki’s new Heartect platform. In short it means that the Swift has lost 40 kg while becoming stronger and more impact resistant at the same time.

Swift front and back

THE BOTTOM LINE

Swift black and blue

The Swift is definitely bound to succeed when it launches in early 2018. The car is more spacious than the outgoing model and also brings some new elements to the mix. While all the major and minor updates the Swift gets are welcomed additions, the car just doesn’t feel as exciting as the older one when it launched in 2003.

Swift Side profile

An all new engine and a much more serious redesign should have been the top priority. Maruti Suzuki had a great opportunity with the Swift to reinvent but it just feels like a hit and miss. Still, the Swift will be sold by the millions as it will be sold by regular Maruti showroom which in turn means that it will be competitively priced without the NEXA premium. To conclude, Maruti Suzuki has definitely got another successful Swift waiting to be unleashed.
