Going on for 20 years now, the City has been the best selling car from the company’s lineup. It has been instrumental for Honda’s overall growth in the country while also playing a major role in the success of the Japanese manufacturer’s various offerings such as the Mobilio and Brio.

    The Beginning (1998-2002)

The year was 1998 when the first Indian born Honda City rolled out. The car received immediate success and soon became one of the most popular luxury sedans of the time. It bore a striking resemblance to the Maruti Suzuki’s Esteem on the outside. But that is where the similarities ended, the City was powered by a 1.5 litre petrol engine.

One of its main competitors was the then newly launched Hyundai Accent which was also gaining a lot of traction. Other similar cars were the Opel Corsa, Astra, Mitsubishi Lancer and Ford Ikon.

    Second Coming (2002-2008)

Honda City ZX Second GenIn 2002 the original City received a major update. The new car was more aerodynamic and featured a sleek design with swept back headlamps. It also featured a ZX edition which was slightly different than the original.

During this time the City took over the market from all of its competition leading to Maruti Suzuki retiring the Esteem while the Lancer and Ikon faced a rapid decline in sales.

1.5 Litre VTEC engine with a max power output of 99.6BHP along with a max torque of 132 Nm powered the City

    Third Generation (2008-2014)

Honda City Third Gen Blue FrontThis was the last complete redesign the City received, the car became longer & wider with major design changes. The headlamps got bigger and wrapped around the front with a grey slatted grille connecting the two. The rear also grew in size with the tail lamps now getting a quadrilateral shape.

It also offered top of the line luxury coming a close second to its elder sibling, the Civic. It was powered by an updated iVTEC engine which produced a max power output of 116 BHP@6600 RPM with a max torque of 146 Nm@4800 RPM.

    Fourth Generation (2014-2017)

Launched in 2014, this is the freshest City and is also the one we see on the streets today. With the dimensions essentially remaining the same rather than being a major update, it was a well received face lift.

Honda City Fourth Gen Half FrontOne major change was Honda offering the City with a diesel engine for the first time. The iDTEC engine as it is known became Honda’s first diesel engine. The Amaze also benefited much from this engine. This diesel unit gives out a max power output of 99BHP@3600 RPM with a max torque of 200 Nm@1750 RPM while giving a mileage of 25.6 kmpl. The engine comes paired to a 6 speed manual transmission.

    Fifth Generation (2017-Present)

Honda City Fifth gen 2017Launched last year, this avatar of the City isn’t much of a change either. Its just another face lift at first glance. There are a few major changes when you actually take a step inside.
