Auto Expo 2018: TOP 5 Sedans

1
Sedans Auto Expo 2018 Featured Image

The Sedan marketplace saw a considerable amount of new competition along with updated vehicles. The Auto Expo 2018 featured a ton of sedans which look to dominate the market in the coming years. From the Honda Amaze to the Stinger GT, all of them were a delight. Here are a few handpicked cars which impressed us the most and might become future segment leaders.

1. Honda Civic

Honda Civic Auto Expo 2018Filling the gap between the Honda City and Accord, the Honda Civic has always been a car enthusiast’s dream while being a bit light on the pocket at the same time. With the whole nation longing for a triumphant return, the Civic was a sight for sore eyes at the Expo.

Honda Civic Auto Expo 2018The highly redesigned car from Honda has received an update after more than a decade. Globally, the car is being offered with a 1.5 litre i-VTEC, a 16 valve 2.0 litre i-VTEC and a 4 cylinder inline engine. 3 cylinder options are also available for the car out of which one is a 1.6 litre i-DTEC power house.

Honda Civic Interior Auto Expo 2018The interior features a large infotainment system which has been centrally mounted in a car which has grown and matured according to the trend rather than maintaining its different and outlandish appearance.

Honda Civic Type RWe wish that the 315 BHP Type R would’ve made it to the Indian shores as well but Honda seems to have decided against it at the moment.

2. Honda Amaze

Honda Amaze Auto Expo 2018Honda is going back to back in our list with its boldly designed second generation Amaze. The car features a more appealing look with an added layer of luxury on the inside as compared to the cabin in the previous model.

Honda Amaze Auto Expo 2018On the front the Amaze looks much more striking thanks the protruding grille and the neatly tucked in headlamps. The rear now features the Honda badge in the center of the chrome strip which is flanked by a brand new set of tail lamps. The car has definitely grown in size which has translated into better leg room and an increase in boot space.

Honda Amaze Auto Expo 2018Stepping inside the Amaze is now a much better experience as the materials used for the interior are much more premium and the car now sports a touchscreen console in the centre.

Honda Amaze Auto Expo 2018Expect the 100 BHP, 1.5 litre diesel and the 88 BHP, 1.2 litre petrol engines to be carried over. Honda has confirmed that the all new Amaze will come with a CVT (Automatic) and a diesel engine combination for the first time ever.

3. Tata Tigor JTP

Tata Tigor JTP Auto Expo 2018The Tigor JTP is a performance version of the already well established and one of Tata’s bestseller: The Tigor. JTP stands for ‘Jayem Tata Performance’ and basically translates into the Tigor now developing 109 BHP at the wheels. All of this power comes thanks to a 1.2 litre turbocharged petrol engine.

Tata Tigor JTP AUto Expo 2018Except receiving a major bump in performance, the car has also been made to look much more sportier with an all new bumper, side skirts and blacked out headlamps. Other changes include the all red ORVMs, an air scoop in the bonnet, diamond cut alloys and JTP branding all over the car.

Tata Tigor JTP Auto Expo 2018Inside the cabin you get leather upholstery, aluminium pedals, sporty red coloured trims and an 8 speaker Harman Kardon system.

Tata Tigor JTP Auto Expo 2018The Tiago which is a hatchback version of this car also gets the performance and stylish overhaul and is similarly called the Tiago JTP. A performance version of an already successful vehicle is always an exciting concept to delve into and an Indian automaker sharing the same ideology always makes it that much sweeter.

4. Kia Stinger GT

The Auto Expo 2018 officially showcased what Kia has planned for the future of the Indian car market. The Stinger GT is their flagship sedan and looks strikingly beautiful and is aimed at the luxury sedan segment which is mainly dominated by Audi, Mercedes and BMW.

Kia Stinger GT Auto Expo 2018The elongated front of the car looks the most aerodynamic of all the cars at the Expo. The LED headlights complete with DRLs are upswept to suit the overall imposing and yet sporty appeal of the coupe. The front also features a large air dam and vents which were developed at the Nürburgring for enhanced aerodynamics.

Kia Stinger GT Auto Expo 2018From the side the grand tourer looks more muscular thanks to the 19 inch alloy wheels and the air vents and giving the car a coupe look, the shoulder line rises towards the back.

Kia Stinger GT Auto Expo 2018At the rear is a big diffuser flanked by a pair of shotgun exhausts on either side. The LED tail lights really lends the car a classy grand tourer look as well.

Kia Stinger GT Auto Expo 2018When it comes to power, Kia has made sure that the Stinger GT has loads of it. The 3.3 litre V6 engine develops 360 BHP and 510 Nm of torque at the peak of its rev range. There is also another engine which has four cylinders in line to produce around 260 BHP. Both of the engines come paired to an 8 speed automatic gearbox with paddle shifters.

Kia Stinger GT Auto Expo 2018As exciting as the proposition of a new brand coming into the luxury sedan car segment sounds sadly, it isn’t meant to be as Kia has confirmed that the Stinger GT won’t be going on sale in India due to the high import costs associated with it.

5. Toyota Yaris

While other companies like Hyundai and Honda have been competing for the crown in the premium sedan marketplace, Toyota hasn’t been nowhere near as successful. However things are finally looking up for the Japanese brand as they have recently unveiled a new competitor in the form of Toyota Yaris.

Toyota Yaris Auto Expo 2018The sedan comes loaded with numerous modern features such as ABS, EBD, ISOFIX mounts and hill start assist along with a vehicle stability program. The car also features 7 airbags, tyre pressure monitoring, rear parking sensors and brake assist. Therefore the car is as good as any when it comes to safety and electronic driver aids.

Toyota Yaris Auto Expo 2018Coming onto the exterior of the car, on the front the Yaris seems to have a lot of elements piled up together and the car looks a bit overdone from a design perspective.

Toyota Yaris Auto Expo 2018The rear however is a much more sorted affair. The LED tail lights wrap around the boot with an integrated lip spoiler. The Yaris looks daft and has a front which is definitely out there. The styling matures towards the back which gives you a feeling that Toyota has tried to cram all the design pointers at the front and lost interest moving rearwards.

Toyota Yaris Auto Expo 2018Another major problem the Yaris will be facing in the Indian market is the lack of a diesel engine. Yes, Toyota plans to sell the Yaris as an exclusively petrol sedan with a 1.5 litre engine which will be mated to a 6 speed manual and a 7 speed automatic (CVT) gearbox.

AUTO EXPO 2018: The EV Edition

1
EV Edition Featured Image

With the Indian government pushing heavily for electric cars and other alternative energy sources, many of the major manufacturers showcased their electric might. Surprisingly a lot of startups and smaller companies also took part in the EV race. Here are some of the electric cars you might end up driving in the future.

1. Mahindra e-KUV100

Mahindra eKUV100 Auto Expo 2018The KUV100 was already a successful mini SUV and now with an electric motor the car looks to be future ready as well.

Mahindra eKUV100 Rear Auto Expo 2018Going from 0 to 100 kmph in 9 seconds with a top speed of 186 kmph the KUV100 electric SUV is a very attractive package. The EV will have a range of 350 km and can be charged from 0 to 80% of the battery in just 90 minutes.

2. Uniti One

Uniti One Auto Expo 2018Uniti is a company from Sweden which aims to launch the One EV in the Indian market by 2020. 5 seats with electronic steering wheel and a range of 200 km on a single fast charge sounds quite practical and when you take the size of the car into account it starts to fit the description of a perfect city runner.

Uniti One Auto Expo 2018The Uniti One also boasts of the world’s largest heads up display (HUD) and with autonomous elements being added to the mix the car is as intuitive and safe as can be. In fact it has a 5 star NCAP rating. It will be really interesting to see when this smart and little car ends up on the Indian roads.

3. Hyundai Ioniq

Hyundai Ioniq Auto Expo 2018The Ioniq was one of the main attractions in the company’s loaded Expo arsenal. The car was showcased in two avatars: a fully electric and a hybrid. The all electric powertrain features a 28 kWh battery which produces 120 BHP and 295 Nm of torque. The range is claimed to be good for 280 km on a single charge. 0-100 kmph is done away with in just 9.9 seconds with the car accelerating further to a top speed of 165 kmph.

Hyundai Ioniq AUto Expo 2018The hybrid combines a 1.6 litre petrol engine with a 43 BHP electric motor resulting in a combined power output of 140 BHP and 265 Nm of torque. Hyundai had been wanting to launch the Ioniq in India but sadly these plans have since been dropped due the government placing hybrids in the highest tax bracket post GST revision.

4. Tata Tiago & Tigor EVs

Tata Tigor EV Auto Expo 2018The petroleum powered Tiago and Tigor have been well received in the country and their EV siblings look to follow in their footsteps by the second quarter of 2018. On the outside the cars remain identical to the ICE versions except for the EV badging and blue accents all over them.

Tata Tigor Auto Expo 2018Tata claims that both of them are capable of going 130 km on a single charge.

5. Renault Zoe

Renault Zoe Auto Expo 2018The Zoe is the highest selling EV in Europe and now the car looks to make the same impact in India. Powered by a 22 kWh battery the car is good for 240 km on a single charge.

Renault Zoe Auto Expo 2018The thin sweeping headlamps and the curved DRLs give the front a quirky and cute look with a small air dam on the bottom. The overall dynamic and fluid Zoe is expected to be priced around the Rs. 11 lakh mark when launched.

Renault Zoe eSports Concept Auto Expo 2018 Another really interesting EV which was featured alongside the Zoe was the Renault Zoe e-Sports Concept. While it does look familiar to the standard car its anything but normal. Just looking at the car’s massive air intakes upfront and a dominating roof spoiler on the back gives you an idea of its capabilities.

Renault Zoe eSports Concept Auto Expo 2018And if you still have some doubts here are some of the figures this little all electric racer can boast about. It is powered by two batteries which give it a total power output of 456 BHP along with a peak torque of 640 Nm. 0-100 kmph is over with in just 3.2 seconds and it keeps accelerating to an astonishing top speed of 210 kmph.

6. Mahindra E2O NXT

Mahindra E2O NXT Auto Expo 2018Mahindra is back again in our list with an update to its E2O EV which is basically based on the Revai. The front has been redesigned to look more premium with new LED headlamps and the grille has been replaced by a fully black plastic with blue blacklit accents and a Mahindra logo in the middle.

Mahindra E2O NXT Auto Expo 2018The EV also receives a major increase in the battery size which has extended the range to 140 km with the power output being increased to 40 BHP and a max torque of 91 Nm.

Mahindra E2O NXT Auto Expo 2018The interior of the car has been updated and now features a centrally mounted touchscreen with GPS and smartphone connectivity. The company also claims that the car can be charged from 0-80% in 90 minutes using a fast charger. The E2O NXT is expected to be launched by this year itself.

7. BMW i3s

BMW i3s Auto Expo 2018Already on sale on American and European markets, the BMW i3s is a very popular and successful EV internationally. The car produces 182 BHP of power and boasts a max range of upto 280 km.

BMW i3s Auto Expo 2018With a 0-100 kmph time of 6.9 seconds and suicide doors like a Rolls Royce, the BMW i3s looks to be one of the coolest EVs of the lot.

BMW i3s Interior Auto Expo 2018On the inside the BMW features a 5.7 inch instrument cluster TFT display and a HD 10.25 inch infotainment system complete with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. The seats and the interior has been made up of recycled plastics and eco friendly fibres. The only problem that seems to persist is the uncertainty of its launch in India as BMW is still figuring out the feasibility of the car in our market.

Is The Future Electric?

0
Electric Cars Featured Image

Electric cars have been under development since the 19th century. The first electric was invented in the year 1828 by Ányos Jedlik from Hungary. Since then electric motor industry has seen it’s fair share of ups and downs.

Early Electric CarAt one point in history London and New York had a couple of companies running electric taxis on the streets. Around the same time the rich and elite of the cities used electric vehicles for their city commute. These were mostly luxurious coach cars featuring interiors made from rich and exquisite materials.

20th Century Petrol CarFast forward a couple of years, petroleum driven cars saw a marked rise due to many technological developments such as the electric starter motor which stopped the need for manual cranking and the muffler which reduced engine noise.

1960s Muscle CarThe internal combustion engine cars became fairly cheap to run due to many oil reserves being discovered all over the world. They also possessed a higher top speed and were able to last for longer distances than their electric counterparts. Hence the development and production of electrically driven cars was ceased and the technology remained suspended.

Tesla RoadsterComing on to recent times, electric cars have been revived and have been improved upon massively. This has been greatly due to environmental reasons and the lack of oil reserves. The one company which has had the largest impact in the electric industry has been Tesla. Their first model, the Tesla Roadster was basically a Lotus Elise which was being run on an electric motor.

Tesla SuperchargersTesla has since gone on to produce many electric vehicles which have been pretty successful thanks to a practical range and higher top speeds. The company has also laid down a network of supercharging stations in many cities over the world which charge the car to full power in about 75 mins making the EVs even more usable.

Mahindra E VeritoNow taking on a more local perspective, the Indian automotive market has never been behind the electric as such. Currently Mahindra is the only company which actually sells electric cars, there is the the E2O Plus and the E Verito.

Mahindra E2O PlusThe E2O Plus is basically a G Wiz which was made by an Indian company called REVAi but was mainly made for being exported.

Tata Tomo Racemo EVHowever, it is a new day and the race of the electric vehicles is officially underway if the 2018 Auto Expo is anything to go by. A huge lot of the vehicles on display were EVs with Mahindra and Tata leading the pack showcasing around half a dozen of electric vehicles.

Tesla Model 3The Tesla Model 3 will also be heading for Indian shores soon. The car will be able to last for 480 km on full charge and will probably cost around 20-25 lakhs.

BMW i3BMW has also been manufacturing hybrid EVs such as thee i8 and i3. The two cars are very different to each other, the i8 is a proper sports coupe while the i3 is more of a small hatchback best suited for the city.

BMW i8The i8 is available in India and the i3 will be following soon. Both of these cars carry an eye watering price tag along with them, the i8 costs 2.62 Cr while the i3 will be coming in at around 30 lakhs.

Toyota PriusMany other major car manufacturers have been producing a lot of hybrid and completely electric vehicles. All of us are aware of the success of the Toyota Prius, Nissan Leaf and many others. Porsche, Ferrari and McLaren have produced hybrids, the 918, LaFerrari and P1.

LaFerrari VS P1 VS 918These are performance focused hypercars which take a technology generally normally resulting in boring and bland cars to make the most exciting and exhilarating machines which are a farcry from a Prius.

Tesla Model SWhether its hypercars or green cars being produced, the use of electricity as a driving force for cars is definitely on the rise. More and more car companies are researching and developing EVs each year.

Petroleum VS ElectricityOur hydrocarbon reserves are bound to run out and alternative technologies such as electric vehicles might be the only way to experience the thrill of a drive in the future. If the development of hybrids and purely electric vehicles is any indication the future is bound to be dominated by wheels being run by a battery. So going electric is the only way forward and it might not be such a bad thing after all.

REVIEW: Toyota Fortuner

0
Toyota Fortuner Featured Image

When it was first launched in 2009, the Toyota Fortuner was hailed as the king of SUVs and it remained at the top of the mountain for quite some. But as the years went by the Fortuner started to feel more and more outdated when compared to the fresh batch of releases by companies such as Ford. Now the revamped Fortuner is back in the running for the title.

Exterior

Toyota Fortuner Exterior FrontThe Fortuner looks years ahead of the outgoing model and it should be as Toyota took a long time to release an update for the SUV. The front takes a more curvy approach as compared to the earlier model’s muscle and robustness.

Toyota Fortuner Exterior LED DRLsThe projector headlamps are sweptback, LED and bordered by DRLs. The chrome accents which have been used on the periphery of the fog lamps and on the grille give the SUV a more executive look. All in all the car looks more polished and refined while also maintaining the street presence of the original one.

Toyota Fortuner Exterior Rear ProfileComing to the rear profile the Fortuner features wrap around LED tail lamps with guide vanes. The sleeker tail lamps feature a chrome bar with Fortuner branding running between them. Overall the rear profile remains pretty similar counting out the major changes to the lights and the bumper being much higher than before.

Toyota Forutner Off RoadThe SUV rides on huge 17-18 inch rims with 225 mm of ground clearance. These two things combine to make the Fortuner an already very capable off roader without even taking into account the 4WD system and all the other electronic gadgetry on offer.

Interior

Toyota Fortuner Interior DashStepping inside the Fortuner is a bit of a mixed affair as the cabin does look up to date and luxurious thanks to the leather highlights but the plastic being used just feels a bit down on quality. The layout of the dash is contemporary and features a 7 inch infotainment touchscreen in the middle.

Toyota Fortuner Instrument CLusterThe instrument cluster features a multi information window flanked by a speedometer and a RPM gauge on either side. The automatic AC controls can be found below the infotainment touchscreen and feel nice and chunky. The Fortuner also features a lot of cubby holes and storage places in the front.

Toyota Fortuner Interior Middle RowMoving on to the middle row, there is enough legroom and the seats support the back perfectly with plenty of under thigh support as well. The back rest can also be reclined for additional comfort. At the press of a button these seats tumble down in a single motion making getting to the last row a simple and convenient process.

Toyota Fortuner Interior Last Row SeatsAs with most 7 seater SUVs there isn’t much room in the last row. Although there is enough head room for an adult, the taller ones among us might want to avoid getting in here completely. There is also a lack of under thigh support and you sit with your knees a bit high. The last row therefore still remains comfortable for kids only.

Toyota Fortuner Interior FeaturesThe new three spoke leather wrapped steering wheel comes with integrated audio and bluetooth controls. Other features available on the higher variants are downhill assist control, keyless entry, a powered tailgate and 18 inch highway tyres.

Toyota Fortuner Interior Safety7 SRS airbags, ABS, EBD, brake assist and a vehicle stability control program all come together to make the Fortuner a very safe SUV

Performance & Capabilities

Toyota Fortuner Engine SpecsThe Fortuner comes with two engine options: a 2.7 litre petrol and a 2.8 litre diesel. The engines come mated to 6 speed manual & automatic. The AT version comes with paddle shifters which makes manual gear shifting available on your fingertips. iMT, Eco and Power are the three other driving modes available on the Fortuner other than normal.

Toyota Fortuner Driving ModesIn Eco mode the car maximizes fuel efficiency and reduces the power delivery significantly. The Power mode is pretty self explanatory and the iMT stands for intelligent manual transmission which matches the revs every time you shift gears, this helps in making the engine last longer.

Toyota Fortuner Electronic Drive ControlUnlike the old Fortuner, the 4WD system in the new one is not engaged all the time. The driver has the option to choose when the power should be delivered to all the four wheels. The rest of the time the car works as a 2WD. This directly makes the fuel efficiency go up by quite a bit while the ride quality also sees its own share of improvement.

Toyota Fortuner Driver Assist & Stability SystemsGoing off road has never been easier in the Fortuner thanks to the various driver aids on board. There is a low range gearbox which helps deliver huge amounts of torque at slow speeds which make sure that the car doesn’t get stuck. The Downhill Assist Control (DAC) maintains a comfortable speed while descending at a steep gradient. There is also an active traction control system which avoids wheel skid and slip.

Final Views

The Fortuner has always been a very well rounded and now that a couple of very desperately needed changes have been applied to the car, it looks more ready than ever to be proclaimed as the premium SUV of the year.

Endeavour VS FortunerThe only thorn in its side is the slightly more competitively priced Ford Endeavour which comes with a bunch of features the Fortuner lacks. So does the new Fortuner live up to its name? Well yes, it does. But is it still the undisputed king of SUVs?

REVIEW: Ford Endeavour

1
Ford Endeavour Featured Image

Originally launched in the year 2003, the Ford Endeavour has been updated, revised and re-imagined thrice. The last one was in 2015 which was also the most amazing one yet. Ford went for a complete overhaul and came out with a beastly looking car with some serious off road capabilities and a luxurious cabin.

Exterior

Ford Endeavour Exterior Up FrontFashioning a fully muscular design, the Endeavour takes an upright and commanding stance. Up front, the car gets a fully chromed out four slat grille with the company’s iconic logo in the centre. The grille is flanked by an automatic HID headlight on each side which also incorporates the LED DRLs running along the side.

Ford Endeavour Exterior Water WadingThe Endeavour rides on 18 inch alloys which adds even more to the appeal and road presence of the car. With a ground clearance of 225 mm, the terrain management system(detailed later on in the review) and 800 mm water wading capability the SUV offers serious off roading potential.

Ford Endeavour Exterior Side ProfileComing on to the sides, the Endeavour looks macho here as well with its scooped out doors and flared wheel arches.

Ford Endeavour Exterior RearFrom its rear the SUV looks pretty standard with aesthetically designed tail lights and a dominant chrome Endeavour branded plate running between the two. The rear skid plate stands out in grey and also houses the rear reflectors.

Features & Interior

Ford Endeavour Interior Side FrontClimb into the Endeavour and one is welcomed with luxurious leather wrappings all around the dash and premium materials being used in the entire cabin while the chrome accents add to the ambiance a bit more.

Ford Endeavour Active Noise CancellationActive noise cancellation is another thing which is on offer inside the cabin. A set of microphones are used to detect engine noise which is then cancelled by opposing sound being played from the speakers. This cancels out the engine noise and provides a noise free environment for perfect conversations.

Ford Endeavour SYNC3 Tech InteriorCuddled in luxury, the Endeavour is smart as well, offering an 8 inch touchscreen infotainment system with Ford’s SYNC3 technology which is more than capable of handling each and every task complete with smartphone and GPS integration.

Ford Endeavour Terrain Management SystemFurthermore, the SUV has a Terrain Management System which basically allows the user to shift between different driving modes depending on the surface on which the car is being driven. There are four modes: sand, snow, rock and mud.

Ford Endeavour Hill DescentThe Endeavour also comes with Hill Descent Control and Launch Assist. The descent control uses the brakes to help maintain a gradual and safe gradient downhill while the launch assist keeps the brakes applied long enough for you to accelerate, eliminating the chance of roll back while going uphill.

Ford Endeavour Instrument ClusterThe instrument cluster is dominated by a speedometer in the centre with two digital screens at either side of it displaying various information about the car such as a RPM gauge.

Ford Endeavour Interior Pano SunroofThe cabin is huge and feels really airy. The panoramic sunroof which is offered on the top end spec adds more to this however it also compromises on headroom for the middle row passengers.

Ford Endeavour Interior CabinThe seats are wide and comfortably cushioned offering plenty of support which is always a bliss on a long journey. However the last row is cramped and is best suited for kids and the passageway leading to them is also very narrow while being hard to get through.

Speaking of the last row, it folds flat to the boot floor at the press of a button. This frees up a massive boot space of 2300 litres

Ford Endeavour Semi Auto Park AssistAdding more to an already loaded feature list, the Endeavour supports semi-auto parallel park assist which not only finds a suitable spot as you drive by but it also steers the car in.

Performance & Mileage

Ford Endeavour Engines 2.2 & 3.2The Endeavour is offered with a 2.2L and a 3.2L diesel engine. Both of these power houses come mated to a 6 speed automatic gearbox with no manual being available throughout the range. The 2.2L engine has a 4X2 drivetrain while the 3.2L one is 4X4.

The King of SUVs….Or Is It?

Ford Endeavour King of SUVs?The Ford Endeavour is a feature rich full size SUV which is very capable off road and is equipped to work surprisingly well in the city too. However, the folks over at Toyota have a serious contender for that title, the Fortuner. These two will always be bitter rivals with one always edging ahead of the other. Which one is it? We will be answering that soon enough.

FEATURED: Maruti Suzuki Dzire

0
Dzire Feaatured Image

Originally introduced in 2008 as more of a swift with a boot in the back, the car quickly gained the same image. The Dzire would receive regular updates along with the Swift. But things have changed, Maruti has decided to drop the ”Swift” moniker and the car has now stepped out of the shadow of the Swift and is now called the Maruti Suzuki Dzire.

The Dzire has evolved into a farcry from its predecessor. The new car looks much more upmarket and premium than the outgoing model. This has been the most intense update the Dzire has received. Here are some major changes for the 2017 Dzire.

Chassis

Maruti Suzuki Dzire HEARTECT Platform ChassisThe chassis is based on a completely new HEARTECT platform which has helped the Dzire lose 105 kg. It has also become stronger and more impact resistant with Maruti Suzuki using high strength steel in the construction. Lower weight means the new car performs better, has superior handling and higher fuel efficiency.

Exterior

Maruti Suzuki Dzire Rear ExteriorThe Dzire is still a sub 4 metre car but this time around it does not look like they just took a boot and stuck it to the Swift’s rear. The design is much better and features LED tail lamps with light guides. There is also a tastefully slim chrome bar which runs the length between the two tail lights.

Maruti Suzuki Dzire Exterior FrontMoving on to the front, the outline of the sweptback headlamps is more defined and they also incorporate LED DRLs and projector lens. The grille which used to be a chunky bar of chrome has been replaced by a trapezoidal slatted design with the Suzuki badge in the middle. The boring alloys featured on the previous model have been replaced by 15 inch diamond cut alloys which is a welcomed change.

Maruti Suzuki Dzire Side Profile ExteriorThe side profile looks much different with the lower curved A pillar which makes the Dzire look much more like a sedan now than ever before. The C pillar also merges with the boot in a much more seamless and elegant manner.

Interior

Maruti Suzuki Dzire Interior FrontIn the cabin the Dzire continues the theme of improved styling and better materials being used. The steering wheel has become flat bottomed and chunkier than before which makes it feel much better than the one previously installed.

Maruti Suzuki Dzire Interior Rear AC VentsThe rear passengers get dedicated AC vents which have been angled upwards for better air circulation.

ABS, EBD, ISOFIX mounts and dual airbags come as standard throughout the range

Maruti Suzuki Dzire Interior Touchscreen InfotainmentThe centre of the dash is where the touchscreen infotainment system lies. It is the same unit as the one in the Baleno with support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. While the dash gets a dual tone treatment with wooden finishing, the rest of the car is beige all over giving the cabin a very airy feel.

Maruti Suzuki Dzire Interior SpeedometerAs with everything else inside the cabin, the speedometer unit is also a giant step ahead from the outgoing one. It gets a chrome rings around the RPM and speed dials with a digital display packed neatly between the two.

Maruti Suzuki Dzire Interior Full LengthThe car has grown wider by 20 mm and the wheelbase has also been increased by the same amount with the cabin gaining 50 mm overall. All of this size gain has resulted in the Dzire getting better shoulder and head room with increased leg room. The boot has also become more sizable by gathering 60 litres more in space.

Performance & Mileage

Maruti Suzuki Dzire Exterior Side Profile PerformanceThe only thing carried over from the older Dzire is the engine. However, another thing which is a first with this car is that for the first time Maruti Suzuki is offering a speed AGS (AMT basically) transmission on the Dzire and it is available with petrol as well as the diesel power unit. The 5 speed manual has been retained from the previous model.

The Finale

To close, its plain and simple, the all new 2017 Maruti Suzuki Dzire is the best Dzire and it brings a lot of first in class standard features in the sub 4 metre compact sedan segment. The car has finally gotten the update it always deserved and is definitely one of the best compact sedans(if not the best) available in the country.

Maruti Suzuki Dzire OutlineThe new Dzire definitely comes with a certain flair and fluidity which was always missing on the older model.

Honda City 2017 Sedans ComparisonThe Verna is the most powerful among the lot with its 1.6 litre petrol and diesel engine lineup. The Honda City takes the next place with the Ciaz coming in last. When talking about power, the way it gets delivered is also a matter of great importance. The Verna pushes you into the seats around its peak torque band while in the City the power is delivered in a linear fashion throughout the rev range.

Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Sedans ComparisonWith its smart hybrid technology the Ciaz makes up for the lack in power with higher fuel efficiency while the Verna and Honda City score somewhat similar where mileage is concerned. The Ciaz does miss out on Cruise Control which is offered in both the Honda City and Verna.

Hyundai Verna Engine Sedans ComparisonThe City and Maruti’s Ciaz are splendid to drive on their own but the Verna just hits all the sweet spots for me as it gives you that feeling of rush when you drive it and seems to be a shining example of a driver’s car in that perspective. It also doesn’t feel too hard to handle and has become more nimble than before after getting the improved suspension.

Features & Creature Comforts

Sedans InteriorAll of these cars come with a long feature list with each of them being on par with each other while also providing a couple of unique things which set them apart. Our main focus is on these and how they may swing your decision towards either one of them.

Honda City

Honda CIty 2017 Interior Sedans ComparisonThe City comes with something Honda likes to call a Digipad, its basically a 7 inch touchscreen audio and navigation system which uses MirrorLink for smartphone integration. While this may not seem revolutionary, it works seamlessly and offers the best smartphone experience a car has to offer.

Honda City Interior Digipad Sedans ComparisonThe City has another trick up its sleeve. It is WiFi enabled and its the only one here who does. Huge props to Honda for making this option available. Just make sure not to use it while you drive. It is also the only car in the segment to feature a HDMI port.

The Digipad in itself is quite like a smartphone with an OS based on Android and offers around 3.6 GB of usable internal storage

Hyundai Verna

Hyundai Verna Touchscreen Sedans ComparisonWhile it may not have WiFi, the Digipad or a HDMI port, the Verna does get a USB port and an aux input (something missing on the City) and a 7 inch infotainment display. The system comes with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and GPS navigation.

The biggest selling point of the Verna is the front two seats which are ventilated and is a first in class feature

Hyundai Verna Ventilated Seats Sedans ComparisonThe Verna also gets a cooled glove box, something which both of the other cars do not offer. Another element which was earlier missing from the Verna was a sunroof which it now gets just like the Honda City.

Maruti Suzuki Ciaz

Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Interior Sedans ComparisonThe Ciaz in it’s current form is much more simple than the other two. It offers a touchscreen infotainment system which has been borrowed from the Baleno and placed in the centre. The unit does offer Apple CarPlay and Android Auto with a clean layout.

Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Full Interior Sedans ComparisonThe Ciaz does not have much to offer and remains minimalist in that sense. However, it is due for a midlife upgrade in this February and we expect the face lift to get an updated system with other upgrades on the inside.

Conclusion

Honda City 2017 Interior Steering Wheel Sedans ComparisonEven with the Verna offering ventilated seats, the Honda City does take the cake on this one. It simply has the best cabin with features such as the screen and WiFi future proofing the car. As for the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, the all beige cabin does look beautiful and airy but sadly it does not feel anywhere as near to that of the Hyundai Verna or the City.

Exterior Design

Sedans ExteriorThe Verna and Honda City look to compete here as well with the Ciaz reportedly not offering much of a change with its face lift. The other two definitely look much more premium and possess a more executive style with an aerodynamic design.

Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Exterior Sedans ComparisonThat’s not to say that the Ciaz isn’t a looker. The car is smart and has a modern design on its own but pales in comparison to the major design updates the City and Hyundai Verna have received in 2017.

Hyundai Verna Exterior Sedans ComparisonHyundai have gone for a more rounded design with the new Verna when compared to its fluidic predecessor. The car now features smooth curves with projector headlamps, DRLs and a bigger hexagonal grille. The rear has also been heavily revised with newer LED tail lamps being bigger and wrapping around the boot ever so nicely.

Honda City Exterior Sedans ComparisonHonda on the other hand have made the City look more aggressive and sharper than ever. It features LED head and tail lamps along with a floating grille which houses the company’s iconic badge. Moving to the rear, the design pretty much remains the same with a few subtle changes which include wider tail lamps.

Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Sedans ComparisonWith its long bonnet, sloping roofline and stretched out head lamps the Ciaz does look aggressive at the front. But the problem seems to be that while the front does look appealing, that is where most of the thought has gone into. The sides look pretty typical for a sedan while the rear is similar to that of the Honda City.

The Ciaz offers the greatest amount of ground clearance at 170 mm which is always a good news specially on Indian B roads. The Verna does come short when it comes to boot space offering only 465 litres compared to the Honda City’s and Ciaz’s 510 litres.

Honda City 2017 Bootspace Sedans ComparisonThe City comes with the smallest fuel tank while the Ciaz offers more but its the Verna which can carry the most amount of fuel at 45 litres of capacity.

Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Bootspace Sedans ComparisonThe Verna and City both offer a wheelbase of 2600 mm while the Ciaz edges ahead with a 50 mm extra. This translates into the Ciaz offering the biggest rear legroom among the three. The City comes in second with the Verna makes one feel a bit cramped in the back seats.

Hyundai has recently brought back the 1.4 litre petrol Verna which is cheaper than the 1.6 litre. But the Ciaz is the best value for money sedan. The Honda City is the most expensive of the lot at the starting price of 8.72 lakhs.

The Wind Up

All of these three have their appeal on their own with the Ciaz offering more space in the cabin than the other two while the City has the most futuristic cabin and also extends some really new and exciting features on the inside. The Verna also provides the user with some first in class features but the list falls short inside the cabin when compared to the Honda City.

Hyundai Verna Front Exterior Sedans ComparisonHowever, it is the Verna which feels the most exciting to drive and that has always been the top priority for Hyundai. In the end, a car which feels the best behind the wheel is the best in any comparison. This is just a personal choice. Many of you are bound to go for the City due to it being a feature packed package while many others might fancy the Ciaz.

today its the Verna which takes the crown to become the true king of sedans

Ciaz Featured Image

First Introduced in 2014, the Ciaz has become a popular C segment vehicle in the Indian market. It offers absolute value for money starting at just 7.83 Lakhs. The Honda City and Hyundai’s Verna have always been its main rivals but the car has done well enough and has clawed back the car segment which had always eluded the company.

The Ciaz is expected to receive a face lift this year which should give the car a refreshed look to compete with the newly revamped Verna and Honda City

Exterior

Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Front Three QuarterThe sharp headlights give the car an aggressive front with the lengthy bonnet adding to the overall street presence of the car. The three slatted grille is typical Maruti with the proud S badge in the middle.

The Ciaz is longer and wider than its competition and therefore offers the best legroom and the largest boot space

Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Rear Tail LightsThere isn’t much going on with the sides of the car which remain tastefully elegant. Coming on to the rear, the car features wrap around tail lights which do look reminiscent of the Honda City. A lip spoiler and chrome badges help in giving a premium look to Ciaz’s behind.

Interior

Stepping on to the inside, the Ciaz offers a minimalist cabin and a beige interior with wooden and metal highlights. Higher variants come with a touchscreen infotainment system mounted in the centre of the dash.

Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Interior Front DashThe Ciaz also offers electronic automatically retractable ORVMs, keyless entry, push button start, a reversing camera and steering mounted controls.

In terms of safety, the car offers dual airbags with ABS and EBD right from the base variant

Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Interior Rear SeatsThe rear seats offer a tremendous amount of leg room with ample under thigh support to provide an overall comfortable experience. Passengers at the rear also get separate AC vents and a sunshade for the windshield behind them.

Performance & Mileage

The Ciaz is powered by a 1400 cc petrol engine and a 1300 cc hybrid diesel engine. Producing a max power output of 91 BHP@6000 RPM with 130 Nm of torque the petrol unit gives a mileage of 20.73 kmpl when paired to the 5 speed  manual gearbox. A 4 speed automatic is also offered with the petrol engine with around similar fuel efficiency.

Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Engine ComponentsThe diesel motor is paired to a 5 speed manual gearbox and produces 89 BHP@4000 RPM with 200 Nm of torque. It is assisted by a large battery which uses brake energy recuperation to charge itself and in turn helps the crank in creating torque hence taking some load off the engine. This hybrid setup yields a higher fuel economy of 28.09 kmpl.

To Conclude

The Ciaz offers a bigger bang for your buck compared to the Verna and Honda City. It is definitely feature packed and will also keep your wallet less empty after every refueling. However it is let down by a lack of power which means it isn’t completely a driver’s car.

Ciaz Rear In MotionNonetheless the Ciaz is a very good all round package and makes up in comfort and convenience for everything lacking in the performance department.

FEATURED: Honda City 2017

0
Honda City 2017 Featured Image

Going on for 20 years now, the City has been the best selling car from the company’s lineup. It has been instrumental for Honda’s overall growth in the country while also playing a major role in the success of the Japanese manufacturer’s various offerings such as the Mobilio and Brio.

The Beginning (1998-2002)

The year was 1998 when the first Indian born Honda City rolled out. The car received immediate success and soon became one of the most popular luxury sedans of the time. It bore a striking resemblance to the Maruti Suzuki’s Esteem on the outside. But that is where the similarities ended, the City was powered by a 1.5 litre petrol engine.

Honda City 98 ICON

One of its main competitors was the then newly launched Hyundai Accent which was also gaining a lot of traction. Other similar cars were the Opel Corsa, Astra, Mitsubishi Lancer and Ford Ikon.

Second Coming (2002-2008)

Honda City ZX Second GenIn 2002 the original City received a major update. The new car was more aerodynamic and featured a sleek design with swept back headlamps. It also featured a ZX edition which was slightly different than the original.

Honda City ZX Second Gen Rear Exterior

During this time the City took over the market from all of its competition leading to Maruti Suzuki retiring the Esteem while the Lancer and Ikon faced a rapid decline in sales.

1.5 Litre VTEC engine with a max power output of 99.6BHP along with a max torque of 132 Nm powered the City

Third Generation (2008-2014)

Honda City Third Gen Blue FrontThis was the last complete redesign the City received, the car became longer & wider with major design changes. The headlamps got bigger and wrapped around the front with a grey slatted grille connecting the two. The rear also grew in size with the tail lamps now getting a quadrilateral shape.

Honda City Third Gen

It also offered top of the line luxury coming a close second to its elder sibling, the Civic. It was powered by an updated iVTEC engine which produced a max power output of 116 BHP@6600 RPM with a max torque of 146 Nm@4800 RPM.

Honda City Third Gen RearA powerful engine along with striking good looks and a luxurious cabin made India fall in love with the City all over again. It was the Indian Car of the Year-2009 after all.

Fourth Generation (2014-2017)

Launched in 2014, this is the freshest City and is also the one we see on the streets today. With the dimensions essentially remaining the same rather than being a major update, it was a well received face lift.

Honda City Fourth GenHonda City Fourth Gen RearThe quadrilateral tail lamps went away to make way for a sleeker design and the grey slats were replaced by a chrome grille which houses the Honda logo. The headlights became broader and got tapered at the ends.

Honda City Fourth Gen Half FrontOne major change was Honda offering the City with a diesel engine for the first time. The iDTEC engine as it is known became Honda’s first diesel engine. The Amaze also benefited much from this engine. This diesel unit gives out a max power output of 99BHP@3600 RPM with a max torque of 200 Nm@1750 RPM while giving a mileage of 25.6 kmpl. The engine comes paired to a 6 speed manual transmission.

Fifth Generation (2017-Present)

Honda City Fifth gen 2017Launched last year, this avatar of the City isn’t much of a change either. Its just another face lift at first glance. There are a few major changes when you actually take a step inside.

Honda City 2017 Fifth GenThe head and tail lamps get LEDs with the front also get DRLs. The grille has also been changed, it is now a mesh above which is a floating chrome bar which houses the iconic Honda logo.

Honda City 2017 Fifth Gen DigipadThe dashboard now features a 7 inch touchscreen infotainment system which offers MirrorLink along with WiFi support for seamless smartphone integration and internet respectively.

Honda City 2017 Interior Fifth GenThe interiors have been revised with a soft touch leather upholstery on the dash. The top spec ZX variant gets six airbags while dual airbags and ABS with EBD remain standard throughout the different variants.

Honda City 2017 Fifth Gen HeadlightsA major part which remains unchanged is the engine. The car retains the iVTEC petrol and iDTEC diesel engines. Both of these units have a capacity of 1500 cc.

Honda City 2017 Fifth Gen RearThe diesel motor produces a maxes out at 99 BHP@3600 RPM with 200 Nm of torque while the petrol has a maximum power output of 117 BHP@6600 RPM with 145 Nm of torque. A 5-speed manual and CVT automatic gearbox for the petrol 6-speed manual gearbox for the diesel.

REVIEW: Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza

5
Vitara Brezza Featured Image

The Vitara Brezza is not the first time that Maruti Suzuki has tried to associate the name ‘Vitara’ with a successful product. The earlier car which known as the Grand Vitara never gained much momentum and was always short of being a hit. This time around though the Vitara Brezza redeems its predecessor.

Exterior

Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza RearThe Brezza features tall and imposing design at the front with many cues being taken from the Suzuki Vitara. Sweptback headlamps, a rectangular chrome finished front grille and a tall bonnet make the compact SUV look much bigger than its actual size. The front bumper features blacked out fog lamps and a honeycomb mesh grille to add to the overall look of the car.

Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza Side Exterior

The rear of the car is pretty simplistic in design with chrome branding, a silver skid plate, wraparound tail lamps and a neat spoiler on the top. The side of the car also follows a simple theme with squared wheel arches and a floating roof being the highlights.

A ground clearance of 198 mm compliments the styling of the crossover SUV

Interior

The interior is all black with a touch of silver linings here and there. The cabin is basically an amalgamation of different elements from various other cars on the Maruti Suzuki lineup. The infotainment system is borrowed from the Baleno, the steering wheel is common in all the Maruti Suzuki cars and other stuff like the AC dials and vents aren’t new as well.

Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza Interior

Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza Interior Start/Stop ButtonWith all that said, the mix isn’t quite bad either. The top spec variant comes with features such as cruise control, push start button, auto headlights and rain sensing wipers. Dual airbags and ABS along with EBD come as standard throughout the range and are even available on the base model.

Performance & Mileage

Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza On the Move

1300 cc turbocharged diesel engine powers the Vitara Brezza via a 5 speed manual gearbox. This is the only engine-transmission combination available on the car which means it doesn’t offer a petrol engine or an automatic gearbox.

The engine, it has a max power output of 89 BHP@4000 RPM and a max torque of 200 Nm@1750 RPM. Maruti suzuki claims a mileage of 24.3 kmpl

Final Impressions

The Brezza is a well put together machine with different pieces of the puzzle coming from various other Maruti Suzuki cars. However, the car does feel a bit under powered which also means you will be changing gears frequently on a steep hill climb.

Vitara Brezza ICOTY 2017Then again it was the Indian Car of the Year-2017 so maybe that doesn’t matter to the majority of people. A really good mileage coupled with Maruti Suzuki’s after sales service boosts and a starting price of 7.24 lakhs make buying the car that much sweeter. It is aimed to take on the likes of Honda WRV, Ford EcoSport and Tata Nexon.
